When we make work under our best conditions, we do more than survive—we thrive.
And what grow toward (or say no) to has a lot do with it. Whether you’re a small business owner, independent artist or side hustling creative, your career pathway will take resilience and strategic decision-making. Where do you choose to go? What makes something a yes? Which environments are best for your growth?
Those answers are nuanced, and for the most part they vary. So, as we prepare for craftHER Market Fall ‘19, we’re interviewing some of this market’s featured makers to learn more about their businesses and the ways they create favorable environments for their work. Read on for a peek into their process.

“My name is Andrea and I am a local Austenite student. My designs are heavily influenced by my Latin culture, and South Texas flair. I create for the woman on the go. She is fearless and imperfectly herself; whether she is hitting the gym, running errands, or stepping out on Rainey, she is confident and radiant in her Jefa Latina Designs Tees and accessories. God Bless Texas”
How would you describe who you are and what you do?
I am a Latina born and raised in Texas. My goal is to create a supportive platform for like-minded creatives through design.
Our theme for this Fall’s craftHER is flourish. How are you looking to grow your business at the moment?
I am diving 100% into more community-centric vending opportunities. I want to know my sisters and brothers. I also really want to be more consistent with my community on my Instagram.
What are some of the biggest growth moments you’ve experienced as a creative and/or business owner over the last year? What can others learn from your experience?
If you doubt yourself, you’re dead! I am constantly fighting myself to let go of that negative thought process. I also have had some major personal life changes and at first, I wanted to crumble, but I decided to lean into the uncomfortable and push through. It’s not easy and I still deal with the hurt, but I decided I will not let it stop me from my goals/ dreams.
How do you handle criticism and feedback?
I actually really appreciate criticism and feedback because at least they see me hustling. I am so grateful to have any support, and honestly, I cannot grow if I am in a bubble.
Sustaining a creative business is tough. What are some money mindsets you’ve had to learn as an artist / entrepreneur?
Give a quality product and respect your customers. Every dollar is someone’s hard-earned money that they are investing in my business, without them its really just a hobby with sunken cost.
How do you hold yourself accountable to the goals you set? How do you bounce back when something doesn’t go as planned?
Put your money where your mouth is. I’ve had this dream for so long; one day I was tired of dreaming and thought “if you’re going to waste money on entertainment or electronics, why not actually invest in yourself.” Nothing ever really goes according to plan, but that’s okay. Doing things with intention and care will help you bounce back. Also, own your mistakes immediately and find a solution.
Any final thoughts you want to share with the craftHER community on supporting local businesses?
I am so grateful to have been selected as a vendor. This is my first-ever vending opportunity and the launch of my collection. Because of this awesome nonprofit, I am able to showcase my work and create an opportunity for my business, for friendships, and growth. I will never forget the chance you have given me. The ball is in my court and I’m so grateful to have the catalyst be with #bossbabesATX.
