On Creating A Wellness Brand And Accountability: Jasmine Cormier of Soy Society Wellness

this fall, our theme is: flourish.

flourish (n.): to grow or develop in a healthy or vigorous way, especially as the result of a particularly favorable environment.

When we make work under our best conditions, we do more than survive—we thrive.

And what grow toward (or say no) to has a lot do with it. Whether you’re a small business owner, independent artist or side hustling creative, your career pathway will take resilience and strategic decision-making. Where do you choose to go? What makes something a yes? Which environments are best for your growth?

Those answers are nuanced, and for the most part they vary. So, as we prepare for craftHER Market Fall ‘19, we’re interviewing some of this market’s featured makers to learn more about their businesses and the ways they create favorable environments for their work. Read on for a peek into their process.

Jasmine Cormier of Soy Society Wellness

about today’s featured maker: jasmine cormier of soy society wellness

Pleasure to meet you! I'm Jasmine, the owner of Soy Society Wellness.

I am an avid health enthusiast. I am not afraid of trying the unusual. I went from managing apartment complexes to working full-time in the fitness health industry.

Creating Soy Society Wellness came from piecing all of me together versus trying to keep all my interests and values separated.

In 2015, I was struggling to manage my anxiety and depression. With no treatment, I began to have anxiety attacks at home and at the workplace (office). Anti-Depressants were more of a way to get me started on better managing my mental health and not an end-all-be-all means of fixing the issue. In my soul search, I became a certified RYT- 200 Vinyasa Yoga and Yoga Sculpt teacher. The mind-body connection strengthened who I was from the inside- out.

Shortly after, I began my hand-poured candle collection to allow me peace through working with my hands. Creating aromatherapy candles grew my knowledge of essential oils, not only in my yoga practice but also their benefits in everyday home-life. Slowing down to hand make each candle keeps me grounded in my work and journey of mindfulness and wellness.”

How would you describe who you are and what you do?

I am a black maker who believes in having a product I can be proud to share. Soy Society Wellness has a brand of soy wax candle, wax melts, and massage lotion candles infused with quality essential oils for their aromatherapy benefits.

What are some of the biggest growth moments you’ve experienced as a creative and/or business owner over the last year? What can others learn from your experience?

Our biggest growth thus far has been rebranding for a more polished look. Other can learn from me that it is okay to start small and as the business grows implement the larger and grander visions you have for the company. There’s so much to learn at level one. Each new level will have a learning curve, so be gracious to yourself.

How do you hold yourself accountable to the goals you set? How do you bounce back when something doesn’t go as planned?

I hold myself accountable by bouncing ideas with close and trusted friends. I give them testers for feedback which is valuable to moving forward to the next step in the process. When something doesn’t go as planned I try to stay positive, figure out what didn’t work, and always try one more time.

Any final thoughts you want to share with the craftHER community on supporting local businesses?

Thank you for supporting local businesses. It really is such a great feeling when someone purchases from me. It builds up confidence in my product knowing that someone trusts that the Soy Society candles, or other local handmade item, will serve its purpose as good as a major brand will.
