On Self-Expression and Blending Work and Play: Karla Cabido of Karmita
Today, we’re chatting with one of The Front Market’s Spring 2024 vendors, Karla Cabido of Karmita.

Tell us about your creative journey. What made it hard? What made it easy?
My creative journey has been a mix of challenges and triumphs. It all began during the pandemic when I had a lot of extra time at home. What started as a hobby turned into a full-time gig as I realized people appreciated my work.
The hardest part was dealing with self-doubt and starting a business with little knowledge. Gradually, I learned from my mistakes, figured things out, and discovered how to navigate the business side of things.
On the other hand, the easiest part has been doing what I love: painting and creating. Additionally, living in Austin, I benefited from a supportive creative community and access to online resources, which made the journey smoother.
What does your day-to-day as a creative look like?
Each day is different, but it usually starts with quiet time to review and prioritize tasks. I spend hours painting in my studio, taking breaks as needed. Some days are dedicated to laptop work, emails, or managing my online presence. This dynamic blend of creating, planning, and networking keeps me inspired and engaged.
Where do you find inspiration for your work?
I find inspiration in the colorful things around me, whether it's places I visit or things I see online. Vibrant shapes and hues on the streets or in Instagram photos spark my creativity. Consuming artwork in different ways helps me discover these inspiring elements and enrich my work.
Our theme this season at Future Front is RITUALS. What are some of your favorite rituals?
Before I begin my creative day, I first check my calendars to review any specific or special tasks scheduled for the day. Following this, one of my cherished morning rituals is meticulously organizing and cleaning my workspace. I gather all the essentials I need on my table like brushes, paints, the pieces I’ll be painting, water and often my iPad for reference or entertainment while I work. Before sitting down, I also take a moment to do some stretches for my back, ensuring I start with a comfortable and relaxed posture. This ritual brings me peace as I see my surroundings clean and in order. It helps me maintain focus without interruptions, allowing me to immerse myself fully in my creative process.

What advice would you give to a creative just starting out?
Starting out as a creative can be both exciting and daunting. My advice would be to embrace experimentation and not be afraid to make mistakes, they're often where the most learning happens. Keep honing your craft, stay curious, and don't compare your journey to others. Trust in your unique perspective and creativity, and most importantly, enjoy the process.

What does your relationship between work and play look like?
For me, work and play blend together naturally. Painting is my job, but it's also my favorite way to unwind and express myself creatively. I enjoy every aspect of the process, from planning and creating to the satisfaction of seeing a finished piece. Even when I'm experimenting with new techniques or just painting for fun, it feels like play because I love what I do so much.
What part of running your business do you secretly love? Secretly hate?
I love having the freedom to set my own schedule and work at my own pace. Being able to stay home with my dog, without the stress of commuting or rigid time constraints, is incredibly relaxing for me. On the flip side, even though I control my schedule, it can be hard to stop working and draw a line between my work and personal life.
